Chapter 1

The narrator begins his story by introducing a little facts about his father and brother. His brother is a writer in Hollywood, where he drives his Jaguar. He wrote The Secret Goldfish, which was about a little kid who owns a goldfish, and don’t want anyone to look at it because he bought it with his own money. Furthermore, the narrator introduces Pencey Prep in Agerstown, Pennsylvania, where he attended and left. He shows his negative thoughts about the school by saying all the advertisements of Pencey Prep are all false. Once, Pencey had a football game against Saxon Hall. The narrator was up on Thomsen Hill, and there he saw Selma Thurmer—the headmaster’s daughter. After the game, he went to meet Mr. Spencer.
